Qassem Soleimani, the Role Model of Bravery, Compassion, and Service
As Iran gains international notoriety for its retaliatory operations against the Zionist regime in addition to public burning of an effigy of Baal in protest of the Epstein blackmail scandal, it is important to add the defeat of ISIS to Iran's list of admirable actions, primarily led by the heroic efforts of Martyr Qassem Soleimani.
Qassem Soleimani’s life was defined by resilience, discipline, and unwavering commitment. From a poor shepherd in rural Iran to one of the most influential military figures in West Asia, his journey reflects a combination of personal hardship, moral courage, and strategic vision.
Humble Beginnings
Qassem Soleimani was born on March 11, 1957, in the village of Qanat Malik, in Iran’s Kerman province. Raised in a poor family, he began working as a shepherd at age five, often wearing tattered clothing and worn-out shoes while tending sheep in harsh conditions. Reflecting on this period, Soleimani wrote, “I used to go to the wild almond forest without fearing the wolves that were waiting to hunt the sheep in the winter.” Enduring long walks on rocky terrain with bleeding feet, he developed resilience, self-reliance, and fearlessness—traits that would later define his leadership style.
At fifteen, he moved to the city to find work and support his family. Small in stature and physically weak, he was repeatedly rejected by employers. “I knocked on the door of every shop, café, restaurant and workshop asking, ‘Do you need a worker?’ Everyone would look at my small stature and turn me down,” he recalled. Eventually, he found employment with a builder, carrying heavy bricks. Despite the physical strain, he treasured small rewards from honest work: “With two rials, I bought a pack of small Minoo biscuits and four bananas for five rials. I really enjoyed them. All the tiredness I had been feeling was gone. It was the first time I ate a banana.” After six months, he could send money home, a moment of deep satisfaction.
Alongside labor, Soleimani dedicated himself to personal discipline. He trained in martial arts and practiced Zurkhaneh, a traditional Iranian sport emphasizing physical strength, ethical conduct, and humility. By his early twenties, he had developed both mental and physical resilience, preparing him for the challenges of leadership.
Revolutionary Awakening and Military Leadership
As Soleimani came of age, Iran was undergoing political transformation. The Islamic Revolution inspired him, particularly the leadership of Imam Ruhollah Khomeini. His activism brought him into violent confrontations with the Shah’s forces. Recalling one incident, he said, “I could not move for three days because of the extreme pain, but I felt a new energy in me. The fear of being beaten and tortured had disappeared.”
After the revolution, Soleimani joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). When the Iran-Iraq War erupted in 1980, he trained as a soldier and soon became commander of the Kerman Division. He earned respect for leading from the front and sharing his soldiers’ hardships. A comrade noted, “Haj Qassem would move ahead of his forces so they would feel their commander was a shield and a source of safety. When a commander wears the same uniform and eats the same food as his soldiers, he wins their hearts.”
In 2006, during the 33-day conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, Soleimani traveled to Lebanon to advise resistance forces. Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah said, “The presence of Gen. Qassem in Lebanon during the first days of the war was very important and vital. He insisted on coming, despite the danger.” His leadership style combined strategic acumen with personal courage, inspiring loyalty among allies and subordinates.
Empowering Palestinians
Soleimani’s commitment to Palestinian resistance was longstanding. During the first intifada in 1987, Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank confronted Israeli occupation with limited resources. Israeli forces operated with relative ease, pressuring residents to flee or submit.
After the second intifada, the situation began to shift. In 1998, Soleimani became commander of Iran’s Quds Force, a branch of the IRGC, and worked to empower Palestinian fighters. He collaborated with Hezbollah to train exiled Hamas members in Lebanon, teaching weapons manufacturing, strategic planning, and resistance tactics. Over the next two decades, Iranian support helped Palestinian armed resistance develop substantial defensive capabilities.
Despite regional conflicts and attempts to weaken Iran-Palestinian ties, Soleimani’s support remained steadfast. In December 2017, Yahya Sinwar, a Palestinian leader, revealed that Soleimani had personally contacted the Qassam Brigades, confirming “the stand of Iran, the stand of the Revolutionary Guards, and the Quds Force and pledged with everything he had to defend our people in Al‑Quds and the survival of Al‑Quds, the capital of Palestine.” For Soleimani, supporting Palestine was a moral and religious duty rather than a political calculation.
Combating ISIS
Soleimani played a critical role in defeating ISIS in Iraq and Syria. After Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa against Daesh in Iraq, thousands of young fighters sought leadership and training. Soleimani, together with Iraqi commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, organized these forces and led them to victory.
In Syria, he demonstrated strategic insight despite ISIS receiving external support. During a mourning ceremony, he predicted, “We will end ISIS in three months.” In just 59 days, forces under his guidance liberated Abu Kamal, the terrorist group’s last stronghold. In a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader in 2017, Soleimani wrote, “With the completion of the operation to liberate Abu Kamal… I announce the end of the dominance of this vicious, evil tree.” His leadership in these operations solidified his reputation as a formidable military strategist.
Martyrdom and Legacy
Soleimani’s life ended tragically on January 3, 2020, when he was assassinated near Baghdad International Airport alongside Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and others, on orders from U.S. President Donald Trump. His death reverberated across the Middle East and the world.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, described Soleimani’s martyrdom as “the reward for years of implacable efforts” and called him “the international face of the resistance.” Palestinian resistance leaders echoed these sentiments. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh referred to him as “the martyr of Jerusalem,” while Ziad al-Nakhaleh of Palestinian Islamic Jihad said he “set an example for free men of the world of how to confront America and the Zionist entity.”
Qassem Soleimani’s life remains a testament to courage, selfless service, and moral conviction. From the hardships of a shepherd boy to the strategic decisions that shaped regional geopolitics, his legacy endures as an example of resilience, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the causes he held dear.
